The IQAir filter system begins with the High Efficiency Particulate Pre-Filter, which retains 98% of all particles 0.3 microns and larger. This prolongs the life of the motor that follows this filter as well as extending the useful life and performance of the gas phase filters.
The gas phase and odor control filters are cylindrical shaped canisters with a total media weight of 11 to 13 lbs.. They are filled with gaseous removal specific media such as pelletized activated carbon and activated alumina impregnated with potassium permanganate. The result is a wide spectrum gas and odor control media that removes gaseous contaminants by both physical Adsorption and also by chemical breakdown through Chemisorption.
Adsorption - The physical process of binding gas molecules to a large surface area. I gram of activated carbon has 10,000 square feet of internal surface area to trap molecules.
Chemisorption - First, gas molecules are physically attracted onto the activated carbon and Alumina media. The trapped gas molecules are chemically broken down through a process of oxidation. Through this chemical process, no reemission of gaseous pollutants occurs.
The final filter of the IQAir GC series of air cleaners is an Electrostatically Charged Post Filter Sleeve. They are 98% efficient at 0.3 microns and prevent any particulates from the gas and odor media from escaping.
