Contaminants Tested

Dust Mite Allergen - this is a biological pollutant and the most common household Allergen. The house Dust Mite is an arachnid (related to spiders), is an eight legged creature that is about 400 microns long (human hair is about 100 microns wide).

Sources - the house Dust Mite is found in almost all homes, regardless of how clean the homes are. Dust Mites are found in carpeting, mattresses, pillows and upholstered furniture. They feed off of animal and human skin flakes primarily, along with other minute organic matter, and fluorish with warm moist environments. Humans shed about 1.5 grams of skin cells and flakes everyday and the warmth and moisture from breathing and perspiration during sleep make bedding a prime area for the Dust Mite. Due to their small size, they are easily transported in air when disturbed or carried in dust balls generated in uncleaned areas of the home. The Life-Cycle of the female Dust Mite is 70 days and over that time, it can lay 60 to 100 eggs and deposit over 2,000 fecal pellets and even a larger amount of partially digested enzyme-coated dust particles.

Health Effects - it is the fecal pellets and the enzyme coated particles produced from the house Dust Mite that cause health problems. These substances contain enzymes, principally proteases, that are strongly allergic. High levels of these allergens can lead to sensitization and acute Asthma. Some allergic symptoms caused by Dust Mites include itching, sneezing, watery/red eyes, runny nose and congestion. This Allergen can also be a trigger for Asthma episodes.

How it Works

The Building Health Check Dust Mite Screen Test Kit is designed to collect dust from surfaces in your home. The dust is analyzed for the presence of Dust Mite Allergens. This is a Do-It-Yourself test kit that requires no special training. The user performs the test and sends the test sample in a postage prepaid envelope to an accredited Laboratory for analysis. A full scan of the Dust Mite Screen Test Kit using an Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) provides valuable quantitative information on the collected dust sample. Once the analysis is complete, a test report is sent to the customer in 3-5 days and provides levels of the results relative to industry guidelines. A Healthy Home / Building Considerations sheet is included with recommendations on actions you can take that may help improve your indoor environment if elevated levels of pollutants are found. The Dust Mite Screen Test Kit kit is ideal for indoor environmental investigation, allergy sufferers, asthma patients, clean room evaluations, etc.
