The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends corrective action be taken to reduce radon levels in your home if long term levels exceed 4 pCi/L. The Safety Siren continuous Radon Monitor is an excellent way to check radon levels as they fluctuate over time.

  • Evaluated and approved by the US Environmental Protection Agency.
  • Exceeds EPA recommended accuracy performance criteria.

  • Easily plugs into any standard 110-120v AC electrical outlet and consumes only 6.5 watts.
  • Numeric LED display range of 0.0 to 999.9 shows the level of radon gas in pCi/L on a short-term or long-term basis.
  • Air sampling begins immediately with an initial reading in 48 hours.
  • Short-term readings display the average radon levels over the past 7 days.
  • Long-term readings display the average radon levels since powered-up or last reset with a maximum reading time of 5 years.
  • Audible alarm sounds 4 short chirps if the long-term average reaches 4 pCi/L or greater or the short-term measurement stays above 4 pCi/L for 30 consecutive days. Alarm is repeated every hour or until the long term reading drops below 4. Alarm can be muted by user.
  • Samples air continuously with the Radon level display updated every hour.
  • A self-test is conducted every 24 hours with an error code displayed if there is a failure.
  • Menu button controls 4 functions: Switch between short and long term display, conduct a manual test, mute or reactivate the audible alarm, clear and reset the memory for new readings.

Indoor Pollutants Monitored

Radon (Rn) - A colorless, odorless, highly toxic gas produced from the decay of radioactive uranium in soils. It penetrates into the home through cracks and holes in the foundation or floor slab. Radon gas in indoor air is estimated to cause about 21,000 lung cancer deaths each year in the United States. Smokers are at higher risk of developing Radon-induced lung cancer. Lung cancer is the only health effect which has been definitively linked with radon exposure. Lung cancer would usually occur years (5-25) after exposure.

Any home may have a radon problem. This means new and old homes, well-sealed and drafty homes, and homes with or without basements. Sometimes radon enters the home through well water. Radon can be found all over the U.S. and nearly 1 out of every 15 homes in the U.S. is estimated to have elevated radon levels.

The Safety Siren Radon detector should be placed in the lowest living area of the home in a location where it will not be disturbed. The audible alarm should be able to be heard from areas frequented on a regular basis. This device is portable and can be used to check radon levels in various areas of the home. Radon usually enters the home through basement slabs and foundation walls, so checking the basement area is a recommended procedure.

Location of the detector should be at least 3 feet from windows, doors or other openings in the exterior walls and placed 1 foot from the exterior wall and 20 inches from the floor. The detector may be placed face up on a tabletop, countertop or any flat surface where the ventilation slots will not be blocked. The Safety Siren monitor must be kept dust free and no object should be placed within 4 inches that may obstruct airflow around the detector.

Areas to avoid include:

  • Drafty areas caused by HVAC vents, doors, windows and fans.
  • Excessively hot/humid areas such as fireplaces, direct sunlight and high humidity areas.
  • Electrical equipment such as televisions, computers and radios.
  • Places where air flow may be inhibited through the monitor such as around curtains and furniture.
  • In general, the detector should not be located in kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms or closets.

  • Power source 120V, 60hz, 6.5 watts.
  • Sensor uses Ionization chamber.
  • Full scale reading from 0.0 to 999.9 pCi/L.
  • Levels updated on the display every hour.
  • Short term readings average over the past 7 days.
  • Long term readings average from the time of last reset up to 5 years.
  • Operating temperature 32°F to 104°F.
  • Storage environment -4°F to 185°F
  • Audible alarm at 85dB at 10cm. Beeps every hour if long-term readings are 4 pCi/L or greater. May be muted by user.
  • Accuracy is +/- 20% pCi/L.
  • Entela (ETL) Certified:
    • UL (61010B-1:2003) for safety electrical measuring and testing equipment
    • CSA (C22.2 NO. 1010.1-92) safety requirements for electrical equipment for measurement, control and laboratory use.

Menu Buttons

  • Long Term / Short Term Monitoring - Change the display between the short term and long term readings by pressing this button for 1 second. LED indicator light is illuminated next to "S" or "L" to indicate reading being viewed.
  • Test - This function is used to test the audible alarm. Alarm will sound in 4 chirps as if it is in an alarm condition.
  • Alarm Mute On/Off - This function allows the user to silence the audible alarm if in an alarm condition.
  • Reset/Clear Memory - This function allows the user to clear and reset the memory for short and long term readings. This is done when the detector is moved to a new location.

The numeric LED display shows the level of Radon gas in pCi/L. Radon Levels updated every hour if there is a change in the level of Radon gas detected. The Safety Siren Radon Gas Detector is designed to notify the user of the level of radon gas on either a short term or long term basis.

Short Term Display - This is a display of the average Radon gas levels detected over the past seven days. This allows the user to monitor short term fluctuations in the home as it relates to seasonal and weather related variations in Radon levels. Detector will alarm when short-term displays 4 pCi/L or greater for 30 consecutive days.

Long Term Display - The long term display is an average reading of detected Radon gas levels for a length of time since the device was powered on or last reset, up to a period of 5 years. This provides the average exposure level of Radon when continually present in the area monitored by the detector. Detector will alarm when long-term displays 4 pCi/L or greater (alarms immediately, no 30 day delay).
