Household Dust Mite and FecesYour bedding is a prime living environment for the dust mite. Dust mites live on human skin flakes that accumulate on your bedding, carpeting and other fabrics throughout the house.  They require a moist environment to thrive and this is provided through water vapor released from breathing and perspiring while sleeping and high humidity room conditions. We spend close to one third of our lifetime in the bedroom and therefore have a considerable long term, close exposure to this indoor allergen. It has been estimated that a mattress can contain millions of dust mites and 10% of a 6 year old pillow's weight may be due to dust mites and their droppings. Since the bedroom provides the greatest exposure to dust mites, one of the major recommendations in the control of dust mite allergens is to encase your bedding and pillows with dust mite proof barriers. These barriers totally surround (encase) or cover (fitted) a mattress or boxspring, providing an impermeable layer between you and dust mites and their wastes. We have more detailed information on dust mite allergens and indoor air pollutants in our Asthma & Allergies and Indoor Air Quality sections of our Education Center.

Dust Mite Allergens May Cause:
  • Year-around hay fever symptoms.
  • Asthma development.
  • Chronic Sinusitis.
  • Asthma attacks.
  • Eczema
  • Headaches

The primary allergic reaction from the dust mite is not only the dust mite itself, but the fecal matter that comes from the dust mite. Considering there may be millions of dust mites in your bedding and each one produces 20 or more fecal pellets a day, this can be a substantial allergen exposure. This is important, as these fecal pellets are substantially smaller than the dust mite and get broken down into minute particles as we toss and turn on our bedding. These minute particles then come in contact with your skin and are inhaled in the lungs.

MedibedMedibed Dust Mite Barriers and Encasements for Your Pillow, Mattress and Boxspring
Medibed products are unique in the industry! They are not manufactured with the same type of materials that are common to other dust mite barrier products. They are placed under your sheets and pillow cases and cover mattresses, pillows and boxsprings.  They provide a one-of-a-kind barrier between you and the dust mite allergens in your bedding while you use your traditional pillow cases and bed sheets.

Our mattresses and pillows are a favorite habitat for the House Dust Mite. Their waste is a powerful allergen and may be the most common cause of year around hay fever, asthma episodes and Chronic Sinusitus. Dust mites don't just cause allergic reactions, they are a primary agent for the development of respiratory allergies and asthma.

Our Medibed dust mite bedding barriers and pillow encasements will provide your family with advanced protection and invisible comfort. They are lightweight and naturally air-breathable to give you unrivaled comfort while providing a complete barrier to the dust mite and it's highly allergic waste.

Medibed Products feature:
Comfortable - Unnoticeable under your sheets and pillow cases, Medibed products allow superb air and vapor permeability with no hot, moist feeling against your skin like vinyl and urethane coated products which trap moisture produced by the body. Vinyl and urethane products are stiff and noisy as you move. Medibed dust mite barriers are soft, lightweight, completely quiet and virtually unnoticeable  under your sheets and pillow cases.

Protection from dust mites and their microscopic fecal matter -  3 layer fabric system with a center maze-like structure layer filters tiny dust mites and their microscopic waste for superior protection at particle sizes up to 10 times smaller than other barriers.

Machine washable in hot (150ºF) water - Withstands repeated washings at the high temperatures needed to remove dust mites. Other Manufacturer's barriers may not stand up to these high temperatures. Recommended washing every three months.

Contain no chemical treatments - Does not contain formaldehyde, biocides or other chemicals which may irritate the skin or create a health risk. Great for the chemically sensitive.

Dust mite barrier performance backed by research and testing - Developed and tested by leading medical, textile and allergy groups in England.

Testing and Research
Medibed was developed with the participation of the Medical Entomology Center at Cambridge University and physical testing was conducted by the British Textile and Technology Group. Medibed met or exceeded established standards even after repeated high-temperature washings. Medibed has also received certification from the British Allergy Foundation.

Medibed Dust Mite Barrier Multi-Layer Fabric

Unique three layer fabric system allows moisture
and air to pass through while Allergens are trapped!

Testing was conducted by the Institute of Occupational Medicine at Edinburgh University in 1998. Trials on Medibed dust mite barriers and other type barriers measured the escape of particles from actual pillow encasements under user conditions. "Real world" conditions were simulated for the compression of the pillow by a sleeper and measurements were taken on particles that escaped from various pillow encasement barriers. Dust mite waste in mattresses and pillows eventually break down to very fine particles.  Testing was performed using particles of 0.6 to 1.5 microns in size to simulate dust mite waste that have broken down. Medibed dust mite barriers were shown to be 98% effective at preventing particle escape.

We Recommend Covering All Boxsprings, Mattresses and Pillows for Complete Protection
