Food Dehydrating
Dehydrating
is simple, easy and provides many benefits. Foods have intense flavor and lose minimal nutrients. Foods last for a
long time without preservatives and can be taken
on hiking trips, used as snacks and made a part of a complete meal.
No refrigeration is needed and any
jar or closeable bag can be used to store the food. Store bought
dehydrated food is expensive and full of additives and sweeteners. Dry
food yourself and save money and avoid all the chemical additives. |

Make Fruit and
Vegetable Powders and Herb Seasonings
Dry
your fruits, vegetables and herbs until extra dry. Place them in your
blender and pulverize them into a flour like consistency. Add fruit
powders to your baked goods, puddings, whipped creams, yogurts and
beverages. Add powdered vegetables like onions, celery and tomato to
soups, salads and egg dishes. Mix them with water, milk or juices and
they make great natural baby foods. Convert dried herbs into flavorful
blended vinegars, herb salts and seasoning mixes. |
Make Trail Mix,
Health Bars and Roll-Ups
Make
your own powerful nutritious energy bars with rolled oats, chunks of
dried fruit, yogurt, honey, coconut, and nuts. Trial mix can be enjoyed
anytime a satisfying and nutritious snack is desired.
Combine granola, kiwi fruit, papaya, mango, peaches, pears, plums,
apples and pieces of fruit leathers and yogurt taffy. Use your
imagination and personal tastes to develop the recipe you like best.
Pour your favorite yogurt and fruit juices on the Teflex sheets to make
tasty quick energy treats. Blueberry-grape, strawberry-kiwi, pina colada
and more!
Your Excalibur dehydrator
can dry vegetable seeds also. Pumpkin seeds make a great tasty snack.
Simply remove the seeds from the pumpkin, wash thoroughly and spread
them out in a single layer on the tray. Sprinkle with seasonings to
taste and dry at 110° - 120°F until dry. |
Make Jerky
Many different types
of meats, wild game and fish can be made into jerky. Slice the meat 3/16 of an
inch thick and marinate in the refrigerator for 2-4 hours with soy,
worcestershire, terriyaki, or barbecue sauces, beer, wine or any other
combination you like. Add lemon, pepper, specialty salts, chopped onions, garlic
or vegetable powders in the marinade. Place on dehydrator tray at 145°F for 4-6
hours.

Make Dough Art
and Cake Decorations
Dough
art is great for hanging ornaments, party favors and special occasions.
The dehydrator uses even heat and lower temperatures that prevents
cracking and browning that may occur when you use a conventional hot
oven. The removable shelves of the Excalibur dehydrator allows you to
make large dough art pieces.
The basic recipe is as
follows:
- 4 cups flour
- 1 cup salt
- 1 3/4 cup
water
- food coloring
as needed for colored dough
|
First combine the flour
and salt then mix in the water and knead for about 5-10 minutes. Roll
out the dough and shape it into the desired shapes or use cookie
cutters. Place the dough items on Teflex sheets and dry on the highest
setting for about 2-4 hours. When dry, paint with craft paints and seal
with a plastic fixative available at your local craft store.
Dehydrate
the frosting for cake decorations. Mix your favorite recipe and squeeze
out of your cake decorating device into the shapes you want on a Teflex
sheet or saran wrap. Usual drying time is 1-3 hours at 100° - 110° F. |
