Yogourmet Probiotics Yogurt Starter

Probiotics are naturally occurring beneficial bacteria that are present in the gastrointestinal tract of healthy humans and animals. They are known to participate in a wide variety of positive and health promoting activities in human physiology. The two dominant strains of probiotic microflora in the human intestinal tract are Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum. These are also the two most widely researched and documented. A number of other beneficial probiotic microorganisms also occur naturally in varying amounts and are available in supplemental form.

Specific Beneficial Actions of Probiotics

  • Enhance general digestion and assimilation

  • Improve assimilation of proteins

  • Improve assimilation of calcium and iron

  • Improve peristalsis (improves colon health and removes toxins)

  • Help digest lactose, thereby reducing symptoms of lactose intolerance

  • Synthesize vitamins B3, B5, B6, B12, folic acid, biotin, and K

  • Produce lactic acid and natural antibiotics (e.g. hydrogen peroxide) that inhibit the growth of harmful organisms including candida, viruses, pathogenic bacteria, and parasites

  • Promote competitive exclusion of pathogenic bacteria

  • Reduce or prevent passage of toxins into blood stream

  • Deactivate mutigens and carcinogens (cancer preventing properties)

  • Enhance macrophage and lymphocytic activity (immune stimulating properties)

Other Reported Benefits of Probiotics

  • Help lower cholesterol levels

  • Help maintain a healthy hormonal balance

  • Prevent gas, bloating and indigestion

  • Help alleviate allergies and food sensitivities

  • Reduce cravings

  • Help prevent constipation and diarrhea

  • Help eliminate or reduce bad breath

Known Causes of Destruction (or Reduction) of the Natural Healthy Probiotic Microflora within the Human System

Antibiotics (especially strong broad spectrum varieties), antacids, cortisones, food additives, alcohol and caffeine, birth control pills, fluorinated and chlorinated water, high saturated fat and high sugar diets, refined foods and stress.

Beneficial Bacteria

Lactobacillus acidophilus

Inhabitant of the intestinal tract of humans and animals. Attributed benefits: cholesterol reduction, inhibition of undesirable bacteria, improved lactose intolerance, reduce carcinogen production, inhibits infections and improves immune response.

Bifidobacterium bifidum

Inhibits growth of E. coli in the small intestine.

Bifidobacterium infantis

Flourishes in breastfed infants.

Enterococcus (streptococcus) faecium

A hardier lactic acid bacteria that survives heat.

Lactobacillus salivarius

Isolated from the intestines of humans.

Lactobacillus bulgaricus

Starter culture for cheese and yogurt.

Streptococcus thermophilus

A good source of lactase to aid digestion of milk sugar.
