How It Works

The AeroGarden^TM Technology

1. Built-in Plant Lighting System - The AeroGarden^TM is the first indoor, soil-free growing system that includes lights, which means no sunlight is required and you can place it absolutely anywhere – even in a pantry or a darkened hallway. The AeroGarden^TM uses a compact fluorescent Grow Bulb specially designed for fast, healthy plant growth in the AeroGarden^TM. This bulb employs a unique European fitting to discourage the use of other bulbs that may be a fire hazard and will certainly be less effective at growing plants.

AeroGarden^TM bulbs are extremely energy efficient and should be replaced after 6 months of continuous use in order to maintain their peak effectiveness and maximize plant growth. The AeroGarden^TM grow light system is automatically controlled by a built-in, control panel computer. The lights go on and off automatically, giving your plants exactly as much light, and darkness as they need, at the push of a single button. There is even a button that allows you to temporarily turn off the lights whenever needed such as when entertaining.

2.  Plug 'N Grow^TM Bio-Dome^TM Seed Systems - Each Seed Pod has a dome that creates a perfect, mini-greenhouse environment for young seedlings. The pod label helps optimize humidity for germination and identifies your plants. Inside is the pre-seeded grow sponge which balances the amount of water and air the young seedling receives. Each Seed Pod's placement in the AeroGarden^TM is mapped inside the Seed Kit box and is determined by the plant's light requirements and proximity to other plants.

3. Aeroponic Optimizing Chamber - This inside area creates a near-perfect rainforest growing environment and is where the magic of aeroponics takes place. Because it detaches from the rest of the system, you can use it, temporarily, as a centerpiece. Or, imagine having a make your own salad party with your salad, tomato and basil gardens lined up on the kitchen island! The Grow Surface has holes for growing up to 7 plants at once. It is easily removable for simple cleaning between garden plantings.

The Aeroponic Optimizing Chamber holds a pump that lifts water and nutrients to the Surface Deck, which then flows down over the plant roots, bathing them in an oxygen rich and nutritionally perfect solution. The View Door is where you add water and nutrient tablets, but also gives you and your family the fun, educational and unique experience of being able to watch the roots of your plants grow from under the Surface Deck. Finally, the “Fill To Here” mark clearly indicates how much water to add. The AeroGarden^TM takes approximately 14 cups of water and you can use tap water. If your home uses well or softened water, however, it is recommended that you use purchased or filtered drinking water instead as excess mineral content can impact the nutrient solution and plant growth.

4. Smart Garden Technology - Built-in micro-processor automatically adjusts nutrient delivery, light cycles and water for specific plant types. Built-in light timer turns lights on and off. Built-in reminder system automatically alerts you to add water and nutrients. It is powered through a 5 ft long power cord which works with any household outlet. The computerized control panel takes all the guess work out of your gardening experience. It is basically like having a master gardener in your kitchen! All you do is select your plant type and the AeroGarden^TM automatically turns your lights on and off so they receive exactly the right amount of sunlight and darkness that particular Seed Kit needs. It also controls the water flow, occasionally shutting off the water pump every day for plants that prefer a drier environment. The AeroGarden^TM Control Panel eliminates the risk of under or over watering or feeding your plants by telling you when to add water and nutrient tablets. Flashing red LEDs light up when the water level gets low and every two weeks to let you know it is time to add nutrient tablets.

5. Pro Series Advanced Features - The AeroGarden^TM Pro 100 has several unique features not found on the basic AeroGarden^TM System.

• Adaptive Intelligence - the system tracks garden growth from germination through maturity and automatically adjusts the amount of light and water your plants receive at every stage of the plant's life. This provides for maximum growth and harvesting in the shortest time.

• Super Grow Light Cycle - allows the gardener to override the built-in light timer and keep the lights and pump on for 24 hours a day. This is great for growing plants that thrive on continued light and moisture such as leafy greens and some herbs. This setting provides added flexibility when planting a custom garden, such as with the Master Gardener's Kit. You can plug the AeroGarden^TM into an ordinary appliance timer to set your own pump and light cycles.

• Grow Light Replacement System - automatically reminds the gardener when it is time to replace the grow lights. Grow lights begin to lose their brightness after 6 months and should be replaced at that time. With this feature, it will be easy to ensure your plants will get the right intensity and full spectrum of light needed for optimum growth.   

Control Panel

Water Level Low Light - When additional water is needed, the "Water Level Low" light will blink. Water can be added anytime and it is not necessary to wait for the light to come on. When the plants mature, they may need water added as often as twice a week. When water is required, add water to the "Fill to Here" mark inside the Aeroponic Optimizing Chamber.

Lights ON/OFF -  This button is used to temporarily override the the built in light timer. Once pushed, the light will stay Off or ON until the next time the built-in timer is set to go ON/OFF. This button is also used to set the ON/OFF timer of the lights to the desired time period when setting up the AeroGarden^TM system. In case of power failure, the battery back-up system stores the light timer settings and will resume to your settings once power is returned to the system. Lighting times are specific to each Seed Kit, but generally the lights are on for 16 - 17 hours and off for 7 - 8 hours per day to maximize plant growth.

Seed Kit Selection - When you have initially inserted the Bio-Dome^TM seed pods from your Seed Kit, press the "Select" button to reach the desired plant type you are growing. Once selected, this button is not used again until a new Seed Kit is installed. Depending on the plant type selected, the AeroGarden^TM pump will automatically turn on and off at pre-programmed intervals to provide the nutrient rich solution to the plant roots.

Add Nutrients - When the AeroGarden^TM is first set-up, two "Starting Nutrients" are placed in the Aeroponic Optimizing Chamber. These are nutrients formulated to provide optimum germination and initial growth. After two weeks the "Add Nutrients" light will blink and two "Sprouting Nutrients" tablets are added. After another two weeks and every two weeks thereafter, two "Growing Nutrients" are added. Each time you add nutrients, water is added to the "Fill to Here" mark to provide proper nutrient concentration and the reset button is pressed to restart the nutrient timer and turn off the blinking lights.

Adaptive Intelligence - the green light tracks garden growth from germination through maturity and the Pro system automatically adjusts the amount of light and water your plants receive for optimum growing conditions and growth through every stage of the plant's life. 

Grow Light Replacement System - When the light blinks, it is time to replace the the Grow Bulbs. After replacement, press the "rest" button to restart the Grow Bulb timer and turn off the flashing light.

Planting Your AeroGarden^TM

Step One - after setting up your AeroGarden^TM system, which only takes about 10 minutes, insert the Bio-Dome^TM seed pods from your Seed Kit. Each plant position on the AeroGarden^TM Grow Surface is provided in the seed kit. Place the supplied plastic dome on each seed pod to create a highly humid environment for seed germination. Do not remove domes until seeds have sprouted.

Step Two - add water through the AeroGarden^TM view/access door to the "Fill to Here" mark located inside the bowl. The initial watering will require about 14 cups of water (3.5 quarts). Use room temperature municipal, tap or bottled water. Do not use well or softened water as the mineral content of these waters will alter the nutrient concentration and could impact plant growth.

Step Three - record the planting date on the front cover of the Tending & Harvesting Guide. Add 2 tablets from the green "Starting Nutrients" bag in the nutrient box into the AeroGarden^TM bowl.

Step Four - plug power cord into wall outlet. A green light will come on at the control panel, the grow lights will come on and the pump will begin working. Select the type of seed kit that was planted on the control panel. The light timer is automatically set to come on everyday at the time the unit was plugged in. The light timer can be easily changed to turn the lights on at the time your desire.

AeroGarden^TM Bio-Dome^TM Seed Pod

The Bio-DomeTM Seed Pods are placed in the support tray of the AeroGardenTM Indoor Gardening System. Each plant has a specific location based on their light requirements and proximity to other plants in the seed kit. The plastic Domes create an extremely moist environment to encourage seed germination. A few days after planting, tiny plants will begin to appear through the center hole in the label on each Seed Pod. Remove the clear plastic dome from the Seed Pod at this time. Multiple seeds are planted in each Grow Sponge and will produce multiple plants. Do not remove the label. The label serves to indicate the plant type as well as maintain moisture in the grow sponge.

In a certified laboratory test undertaken at Colorado State University, a comparison of Lettuce plant growth was conducted using the AeroGarden^TM system and traditional high quality potting soil. Q. What is Aeroponics?

A. Aeroponics is a soil-free growing method where plant roots are suspended in air within a 100% humidity, highly-oxygenated growing chamber. Because the roots are bathed with ideal levels of nutrients, water and oxygen, plants grow significantly faster, are healthier, and have a higher nutrient content than plants grown in soil.

Q. How long does it take to assemble the AeroGarden^TM?
A. The AeroGarden^TM is extremely simple to assemble, plant and tend. Most people have it assembled and their first garden planted in less than 10 minutes.

 

Q. How much time do I have to spend to take care of my AeroGarden^TM?

A. Approximately 5 minutes a month. You will need to occasionally add water, drop in 2 nutrient tablets and provide minimal tending to your plants. Most of your time will be spent harvesting and enjoying delicious, fresh food.

Q. How long can the AeroGarden^TM be left unattended? What if I travel a lot?

A. A planted AeroGarden^TM can be left unattended for up to 2 weeks, depending on the type of plants you are growing and their maturity.

Q. When can I begin harvesting?

A. It depends on which Seed Kit you have. You can begin harvesting lettuces and basils 3 weeks after planting your garden and then enjoy continuous harvests for months. Other herbs will take about 5 weeks to be ready for harvest. The fruiting plants, such as chili peppers and cherry tomatoes, will take about 10 to 12 weeks to harvest.

Q. Can I mix seed kits?

A. Yes, although this is primarily recommended only for experienced gardeners. There are three reasons for this: 1) Because the plants grow at different rates and have different leaf sizes, some faster growing plants in mixed kits could over-shadow and block the light from slower growing plants. Experienced gardeners will know how to avoid this issue. 2) Our nutrients have been specially designed for the group of plants in each kit. If kits are mixed the plants could be under or over-fed. 3) Your AeroGarden^TM comes with pre-set light cycles according to kit type. If you mix kits you could be sub-optimizing your plant’s growth by giving it too much, or too little, light.

Q. How long will the plants live?

A. You will get enough nutrients in your seed kits so you can grow Gourmet Herbs, International Basil, and Cascading Petunias for 4 months. Salad greens will last for 3 months. Cherry Tomatoes and Chili Peppers last for 6 months.

Q. How much produce will I grow?
A. You will grow over $100 worth of herbs and basil with the Gourmet Herb and International Basil kits. You will grow hundreds of vine-ripened, delicious cherry tomatoes and chili peppers with the Cherry Tomato and Chili Pepper kits. You will grow many dinner size salads a week, after only 2 1/2 weeks, with the Salad Greens kit.

Q. Are there empty Seed Pods so I can plant my own seeds? Can the Seed Pods be re-used?
A. Currently there are no empty pods available. The reason for this is that the AeroGarden^TM is designed to be a complete system in which all the parts work in harmony, which includes the seeds, nutrients and light cycles. Once the plants have completed their life-cycle, their roots have grown through the grow sponge making it unusable to insert new seeds.

Q. Does the AeroGarden^TM ever get bugs?
A. Since most bugs that plague gardeners require soil for part of their life cycle, you won't see many bugs. If aphids hitch a ride into your home on your pets or cut flowers, they can easily be washed off by removing the grow plug from the garden, turning it upside down and simply rinsing the bugs off under running water.

Q. How much room does it need?
A. The AeroGarden^TM measures 16” long, by 10 1/2” wide, by 15 1/2” high when it is first set up with the lights at the lowest possible level. It has the footprint of a breadbox and it fits under most cabinets. When the plants have grown and the lights are at their highest point, the unit reaches 21” high.

Q. How much energy does the AeroGarden^TM use?

A. The AeroGarden^TM system has been designed for maximum efficiency. The entire system uses less energy than a single 60-watt light bulb when the lights are operating.

Q. What kind of light bulbs does it use?

A. The AeroGarden^TM uses full-spectrum compact fluorescent bulbs exclusively designed for the optimal amount and type of light needed for robust, healthy plant growth.

Q. What is in the Nutrient tablets? 

A. AeroGarden^TM nutrient tablets consist mainly of mineral salts. These provide the 13 micro and macro nutrients that all plants require, in just the right proportions for the plants. The tablets also contain Seaweed for a boost of 70 additional micro nutrients, a buffer so you can use tap water for your plants without adjusting the pH and a binder to hold the tablet together.

Q. Are the Nutrients Organic?

A. To be certified Organic by the USDA, plant fertilizer must be derived from plants or animals. Because the nutrients are derived from mineral salts, they do not meet the USDA definition of "Organic". These mineral salts are completely natural and are the same ingredients found in typical multi-vitamin/mineral tablets. Plant roots can not distinguish between nutrient ions that originally came from plants or animals and those that came from mineral salts. This is because the Organic nutrients go through a number of biological processes that convert them into minerals before they can be used by plants. By providing the mineral salts directly, the plants use their energy for growing more efficiently rather than converting fertilizer into the mineral salts.

Q. Can I use leftover Nutrient tablets from a different Seed Kit?

A. No. The nutrient tablets are specially formulated for each Seed Kit. Using nutrient tablets from a different Seed Kit type may harm your plants and result in less than optimal flavor and growth.

Q. Can I use water from my faucet?
A. Yes, unless your tap water is softened or you have unfiltered well water. In general, if you are comfortable drinking the water and use it for other houseplants, it should be ok in your AeroGarden^TM. Softened or well water may contain excessive minerals which can impact your specially formulated nutrients and impact plant growth.
