Siren Pro Series 3 Radon Gas Detector Monitor
Safety Siren Pro Series 3 Radon Gas Detector Monitor
The U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency recommends corrective action be taken to reduce radon
levels in your home if long term levels exceed 4 pCi/L. The Safety Siren
continuous Radon Monitor is an excellent way to check radon levels as
they fluctuate over time.
Indoor Pollutants
Monitored
-
Radon (Rn)
- A colorless, odorless, highly toxic gas produced from the decay of
radioactive uranium in soils. It penetrates into the home through
cracks and holes in the foundation or floor slab. Radon gas in
indoor air is estimated to cause about 21,000 lung cancer deaths
each year in the United States. Smokers are at higher risk of
developing Radon-induced lung cancer. Lung cancer is the only health
effect which has been definitively linked with radon exposure. Lung
cancer would usually occur years (5-25) after exposure.
-
Any home may have a
radon problem. This means new and old homes, well-sealed and drafty
homes, and homes with or without basements. Sometimes radon enters
the home through well water. Radon can be found all over the
U.S. and nearly 1 out of every 15 homes in the U.S. is estimated to
have elevated radon levels.
Installation
The Safety Siren Radon
detector should be placed in the lowest living area of the home in a
location where it will not be disturbed. The audible alarm should be
able to be heard from areas frequented on a regular basis. This device
is portable and can be used to check radon levels in various areas of
the home. Radon usually enters the home through basement slabs and
foundation walls, so checking the basement area is a recommended
procedure.
Location of the detector
should be at least 3 feet from windows, doors or other openings in the
exterior walls and placed 1 foot from the exterior wall and 20 inches
from the floor. The detector may be placed face up on a tabletop,
countertop or any flat surface where the ventilation slots will not be
blocked. The Safety Siren monitor must be kept dust free and no object
should be placed within 4 inches that may obstruct airflow around the
detector.
Areas to avoid
include:
-
Drafty areas caused
by HVAC vents, doors, windows and fans.
-
Excessively
hot/humid areas such as fireplaces, direct sunlight and high
humidity areas.
-
Electrical equipment
such as televisions, computers and radios.
-
Places where air
flow may be inhibited through the monitor such as around
curtains and furniture.
-
In general, the
detector should not be located in kitchens, bathrooms, laundry
rooms or closets.

Menu Buttons
-
Long Term / Short
Term Monitoring - Change the display between the short term and
long term readings by pressing this button for 1 second. LED
indicator light is illuminated next to "S" or "L" to indicate
reading being viewed.
-
Test - This
function is used to test the audible alarm. Alarm will sound in 4
chirps as if it is in an alarm condition.
-
Alarm Mute On/Off
- This function allows the user to silence the audible alarm if in
an alarm condition.
-
Reset/Clear Memory
- This function allows the user to clear and reset the memory for
short and long term readings. This is done when the detector is
moved to a new location.
Display
The numeric LED display
shows the level of Radon gas in pCi/L. Radon Levels updated every hour
if there is a change in the level of Radon gas detected. The Safety
Siren Radon Gas Detector is designed to notify the user of the level of
radon gas on either a short term or long term basis.
-
Short Term Display
- This is a display of the average Radon gas levels detected over
the past seven days. This allows the user to monitor short term
fluctuations in the home as it relates to seasonal and weather
related variations in Radon levels. Detector will alarm when
short-term displays 4 pCi/L or greater for 30 consecutive days.
- Long Term Display - The
long term display is an average reading of detected Radon gas
levels for a length of time since the device was powered on or
last reset, up to a period of 5 years. This provides the average
exposure level of Radon when continually present in the area
monitored by the detector. Detector will alarm when long-term
displays 4 pCi/L or greater (alarms immediately, no 30 day
delay).
