Water is often called the “universal solvent” because of its ability to dissolve almost anything it comes in contact with. These safety levels are referred to as Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCL’s), which are the maximum allowable amounts of the regulated compounds in drinking water by public water suppliers. Chlorine is a common disinfectant chemical used in water treatment for killing microorganisms. The use of Chlorine can create disinfection byproducts called Trihalomethanes (THM) which are suspected human carcinogens. Chlorine can also produce objectionable taste and odors and make the skin fell dried out when bathing. Hardness is a measure of dissolved minerals, primarily calcium and magnesium, in water. Excess hardness can make washing clothes and bathing more difficult as soap and detergents have difficulty creating lather. Soap residue from insoluble mineral precipitation can be deposited on clothes and soap scum can stain bathroom fixtures. pH is a measure of how acidic or alkaline the water is. Acidic water can cause corrosion of household plumbing and highly alkaline water can create an objectionable "soda" like taste and dry the skin when bathing.

Lead contamination of drinking water is a very common problem in most homes because of the widespread use of lead in plumbing systems and water distribution lines. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency calls lead "a highly toxic metal the agency considers a major public health threat." Although we should all be concerned with lead exposure, children and pregnant women are at the greatest health risk. In children, lead ingestion can interfere with the formation of red blood cells, delay physical and mental development and at high levels of exposure, can cause anemia, kidney damage and mental retardation. Pregnant women can deliver premature babies and have low birth weight babies from high lead exposure.

Bacteria, Nitrite and Nitrate Testing

Bacteria in water is a common problem and testing is especially important to those that have well systems because of the lack of continuous disinfection. Bacteria can cause intestinal disorders. Use this test to monitor your well conditions and determine if corrective measures are needed. Nitrates and Nitrites from lawn and garden fertilizers may leach into your water supply. These compounds bind with hemoglobin and can affect the bloods ability to carry oxygen, this is especially important in children . A National survey by the EPA in 1992 of 1,349 community and domestic rural wells found Nitrites in 57% of domestic wells and 52% of community wells. The Water Quality Association recommends testing private wells once a year for Bacteria and every two years to three years for Nitrates.

Arsenic Testing

Arsenic is a semi-metal element and is odorless and tasteless. Because it occurs naturally in the environment and as a by-product of some agricultural and industrial activities, it can enter drinking water through the ground or as runoff into surface water sources. Short or acute effects can occur within hours or days of exposure. Long or chronic effects occur over many years. Long term exposure to arsenic has been linked to cancer of the bladder, lungs, skin, kidneys, nasal passages, liver and prostate. Short term exposure to high doses of arsenic can cause other adverse health effects. Skin lesions, peripheral neuropathy, and anemia are hallmarks of chronic arsenic ingestion. Because you cannot see or taste arsenic in water, it is up to the well owner to test for arsenic. Arsenic tends to occur more frequently in ground water supplies, especially when demand causes significant drops in water levels in certain areas.
