 According
to the US Environmental Protection Agency, each year, laundry detergent
formulators use billions of pounds of chemicals, many of which are toxic
to aquatic organisms. Almost all of these chemicals are released into
the environment in wastewater and impact our air, water and soil
quality. The products we use
to clean our laundry and wash our dishes may impact our personal health
as well. Some ingredients in
these household products are known
to cause cancer in animals and are suspected human carcinogens. Household
laundry and dish cleaning products can contain hazardous ingredients
such as organic solvents and petroleum based chemicals which can cause
chemical sensitivities and skin irritation as well as release toxic
vapors.

- Some major problems with
conventional laundry and dishwashing products include:

Surfactants - Chemicals to remove soil and emulsify
fats/oils. Some chemicals can be toxic to aquatic organisms, remain
persistence in the environment and biodegrade into toxic byproducts.
Most common is
alkylphenol ethoxylates.

Builders - These chemicals inactivate water hardness. Some
chemical builders have the potential to cause eutrophication in
fresh water, a process by which a body of water becomes rich in
dissolved nutrients, diminishing oxygen levels and a water body's
ability to support various forms of aquatic life. Most common are
inorganic phosphates.

Bleaches - Help remove soils and stains through oxidation.
Common bleaches have inherent toxicity and toxic byproducts, form
hazardous gases and chlorinated organic byproducts and may also
damage fibers in clothing and fabrics. Most common is sodium
hypochlorite (household bleach).

Optical Brighteners & Colorants - May be used to
counteract yellowing of white fabrics. Metalized dyes present health
and environmental concerns. Studies indicate that certain colorants
and optical brighteners may cause cancer or other adverse health
effects such as developmental and reproduction problems in humans.
Most common are aminotriazine- or stilbene-based whiteners.
