Personal Care Products

Personal Care Information
Conventional personal care products in department and specialty stores include synthetic ingredients and man-made chemicals that may put your health at risk with long term use. The average person uses 10-45 pounds of soaps, toiletries and cosmetics per year. With this amount of consumption we should assure ourselves that the products we are using are the safest, healthiest and most wholesome possible. We have more detailed information on Skin Care and Sun Care in our Education Center.

Mass marketed personal care products rely on image building and massive marketing campaigns to sell products. These products contain simple chemical ingredients and are then marketed in elaborate packaging which usually costs more than the ingredients of the product. With these products come a media campaign of famous people, catchy musical themes and slick advertising that have nothing to do with why you are buying the product.

Your skin has the ability to absorb into the body what is put on it .  We should not put anything on our skin that we would not want to eat.  Not all ingredients are required to be disclosed in chemical fragrance laden conventional products. We do not know the health impacts of all the chemicals used in mass marketed personal care products and many ingredients being used today are considered possible carcinogens.   Many companies producing conventional personal care products test these products on animals or use ingredients that were tested on animals. Some products are labeled "Compassionate" because they avoid animal extracts, but they may include animal tested ingredients. Be careful of products that proclaim "Not Tested on Animals" and then include various chemical ingredients and artificial colors. The purchase of these products supports the practice of needless animal suffering and unnecessary environmental pollution due to chemical manufacturing and wasteful packaging.

Some conventional products may include a single "100% Natural" ingredient, use natural base ingredients and then chemically alter them with petrochemicals or contain many natural ingredients only to include artificial colors and chemical fragrances. These types of products can be found in many "Natural Food Stores" and "Natural Body Shops" and are trying to give the impression of a wholesome natural product, but their products have not followed through completely to produce a completely natural, healthy product in every aspect.
