Natural Non Toxic Household CleanersThe products we use to clean our surroundings have an impact on our personal health and the environment. Household products can contain hazardous ingredients such as organic solvents and petroleum based chemicals which can release volatile organic compounds (VOC's) into your indoor air. Some ingredients in household cleaners are known to cause cancer in animals and are suspected human carcinogens. Inappropriate use, storage and disposal of these hazardous household substances may impact your personal health and the health of our environment. View a list of common Household Hazardous Products and their potential health effects. Read more about household hazardous products in the Home Health Hazards section of our Education Center.

EPA's Total Exposure Assessment Methodology (TEAM) studies found levels of about 12 common organic pollutants to be 2 to 5 times higher inside your home than outside. It was also found by TEAM that while people are using products with organic chemicals, they may be exposing themselves to high concentrations of pollutants which may persist in the indoor environment long after the period the product use is completed.

Household hazardous products have a negative impact on our health and the environment in at least 3 ways:

Usage - When hazardous products are used in household cleaning, chemicals are released into the ground and wastewater stream which may contaminate our soil and groundwater. Their use may release toxic and hazardous vapors into the indoor air which can be inhaled. Contact with chemical solutions can be absorbed through the skin

. Overall exposure can produce acute (immediate) or chronic (long term) health problems such as:

  • Headaches

  • Fatigue

  • Allergic Reactions

  • Chemical Sensitivity

  • Cardiac Damage

  • Nervous System Damage

  • Burning Eyes

  • Skin Rashes

  • Runny Nose

  • Cancer

  • Respiratory Tract Irritant

  • Liver and Kidney Damage

Manufacture - The purchase of potentially hazardous products creates a demand for toxic chemicals which contributes to environmental pollution due to the development, manufacture and transportation of these chemicals.

Disposal -  Hazardous chemicals present a problem to wastewater treatment facilities that may not have the ability to remove these chemicals. Most often, hazardous products are not disposed of properly and are land filled or incinerated. Individuals with septic systems that pour chemicals down the drain are introducing these chemicals directly into the soil and groundwater and kill the beneficial bacteria in septic systems that break down waste. Overall, improper disposal of hazardous and toxic household chemicals has a detrimental impact on our air, soil and drinking water quality.

Selecting Non-Toxic Cleaners
Our Cleaning products provide a healthier alternative to conventional mass marketed products. The use of these products are better for your health and the environment.

What's not in Non-Toxic Cleaning Products - no glycol ether, acids, caustics, borine, chlorine, ammonia, petroleum solvents, butyl, phosphate, MEA, EDTA, nonyl phenol, sodium lauryl or laureth sulfate, known carcinogens, artificial fragrance, colors or preservatives.

Here are some key benefits of using natural and less toxic household products:

  • Super Concentrated - Products provide more uses per size than conventional products. This allows economical use, reduces packaging and reduces the impact on the environment of manufacturing and transportation of the product.

  • Environmentally Safe - Products are readily biodegradable, contain no known carcinogens, mutagens, teratogens or pollutants. Will not harm beneficial bacteria in septic systems. Containers are recyclable and/or have recycled plastic content to minimize solid waste generation.

  • Non-Toxic - Products contain no hazardous ingredients or fumes. Use of the products are safe for workers, aquatic life, animals and families. More compatible with people that have chemical sensitivities and allergies.

  • Natural Ingredients - Products use the highest quality, naturally derived ingredients that do not deplete our non-renewable resources.

  • No Animal Testing - Products contain no animal ingredients and have not been tested on animals.

  • Performance Tested - Products work as well or better than conventional hazardous products.

Vegetable Wash
Independent studies from sources such as the Consumer Union and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) have found high level residues of pesticides in our fruits and vegetables. In 1998 the Consumer Digest reported "Your supermarket contains produce from at least 90 different countries...up to 1/3 of fruits and 12% of vegetables from foreign sources...in winter, as much as 60% of fresh produce is imported...more than 98% of the imports are untested for pesticides and pathogens." Less than 1% of all produce gets tested by government inspectors for pesticides and other contaminants.
