Frequently Asked Questions on the CQ-1000 Shower Filter

What is the filtering media?
Enhanced KDF, Crystalline Quartz and Zeolite

How does KDF work in removing chlorine?
As chlorinated water flows through the unit the dissimilar metals in KDF (copper and Zinc) create a galvanic or electrolytic reaction which causes the two chlorine ions to combine with a zinc ion to form a harmless zinc chloride.  KDF does not hold the chlorine, it changes chlorine from an element into a harmless compound.

What is enhanced KDF?
Enhanced KDF is a special formulation of two different types of KDF unique to the CQ-1000.  It is 10% more effective per ounce than granular KDF alone. This combination provides a better performance per ounce of media than other shower filters.

How much KDF is in the filter?
There are 14 ounces of enhanced KDF in each CQ-1000 cartridge.  The enhanced formula gives the performance effectiveness of 15 1/2 ounces of non-enhanced media.

What is the advantage of Crystalline Quartz?
Specially washed and sun-dried quartz crystals help "energize" the water by reducing the water's surface tension.  This allows for an increase in sudsing and lathering of soaps and shampoos.

Are any ingredients harmful or toxic?
No. KDF is commonly used in drinking and water treatment systems.  The virgin crystalline quartz is washed and sun-dried.

How much chlorine will the filter remove?
The CQ-1000 will typically remove more than 90% of free chlorine.  Reduction levels of 95% or above are not uncommon. Temperature and water flow variations prevent shower filters from consistently removing 95% of chlorine.

What about the water quality of the incoming water?
The cleaner the incoming water into the shower filter the longer the filter will last and the more efficient it will operate. If heavy levels of sediment and particulate matter are present in the water the KDF media can become clogged making it more difficult to create the electrolytic reaction required for dechlorination. Some sediment and turbidity will inevitably enter the CQ-1000, however it is specifically designed to minimize their effects through the use of its exclusive, cleanable sediment trapping screen.  Simply, turn the water off, remove the filter cartridge and wipe away any sediment buil-up at the cartridge surface.

Do you have to back flush the filter?
No. The CQ-1000 has been designed to eliminate the need for back flushing.
Will the CQ-1000 remove lead or other heavy metals?
There is no conclusive data to date that KDF can remove lead or other metals when used in shower filters. While KDF has been proven to remove lead and other metals under specific conditions, those conditions are very different from what is present in shower filters.  No tests have yet been done on high flow rates in short bodied filters, such as with a 2 - 3 inch shower filter.

How Long will the CQ-1000 last and how many gallons will it filter?
The ability of any KDF shower filter to reduce chlorine is a function of the quality of the water. As a result it is difficult to measure precisely in gallons of water. Estimated average usefulness is nine to twelve months for a family of four or approximately 15,000 to 20,000 gallons of water usage.

How many gallons will the CQ-1000 filter per minute?
This depends on the showerhead attached to the shower filter. The CQ-1000 was designed to work most effectively with high quality low-flow shower heads. If flow rates exceed 2.25 gallons per minute, the contact time between the incoming water and the filter media will be reduced and this will reduce the capability for dechlorination.

Can I use my own showerhead with CQ-1000?
Yes. Use only a high quality, low flow shower head that does not exceed 2.25 gallons per minute at 80 psi.  Usually, showerheads purchased after 1995 meet this U.S. Energy Policy Act requirement.

Is the CQ-1000 easy to install?
Yes. Simply screw the filter onto your existing shower arm. It does not require the use of plumber's tape for leak sealing. Hand tighten only.

Is the CQ-1000 filter cartridge easy to replace?
Yes. Simply unscrew the filter body cap, remove the existing filter cartridge, check for proper sealing of the "O" rings, insert the replacement cartridge and screw the filter body cap back on.

Is the CQ-100 replacement cartridge recyclable?
You may mail your used replacement filter cartridge prepaid to the manufacturer's address. Unfortunately, there is no discount on filters when they are returned for recycling. There are costs to the manufacturer for recycling the cartridges.
