- Scientists agree
that foods rich in soy protein can provide considerable benefits to heart
health. A yearlong review of dozens of controlled clinical human studies in 1999
prompted the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to allow a health claim
stating that a daily diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol and containing 25
grams of soy protein may reduce the risk of heart disease. The FDA determined
that diets with four daily soy servings can reduce levels of low-density
lipoproteins (LDLs), the so-called "bad choleseterol" that builds up
in blood vessels, by as much as 10 percent. This number is significant because
heart experts conclude that a 1 percent drop in total cholesterol can equal a 2
percent drop in heart disease risk. View

Other studies
reported in the Archives of Internal Medicine and the New England
Journal of Medicine have found soy protein to reduce plasma concentrations
of total and LDL cholesterol and can prompt significant reductions in
triglycerides. Other studies are under investigation that may link soy
consumption to a reduced risk of several illnesses such as osteoporosis and
breast, prostate and colon cancer. The FDA health claim for soy protein provides
consumers with solid scientific information about the benefits of soy and helps
individuals make informed choices to create a "heart healthy"
diet.

Foods rich in soy

Soy Milk Machines

Soymilk - A
soy beverage produced by grinding dehullled soybeans and mixing them
with water to form a milk-like liquid. It can be consumed as a
beverage or used in recipes as a substitute for cow's milk. You can

flavored with vanilla, chocolate, etc and sweetened to meet

- Tofu
- Made from cooked pureed soybeans processed into a custard-like cake. It
has a neutral flavor and can be stir fried, mixed into "smoothies"
or blended into a cream cheese texture for use in dips or as a cheese

Soy foods are a good
source of fiber, B vitamins, calcium, omega-3 essential fatty acids and
naturally occurring phyto-nutrients such as isoflavones. It is easy to add
enough soy to the daily diet to meet the 25 gram of soy protein amount the FDA
recommends for heart health. Soymilk can be added to make yogurt, baked goods
